Journal #15

The product I took a picture of was a free pen from a Chiropractor. It’s not the most amazing product, but because of its unique design I chose to take a picture of it. What I like about this pen is that it is supposed to be shaped like a spine, which is appropriate because it is advertising a Chiropractor. There’s not much writing on the pen except for the name of the Chiropractor and other information about it. Even though it is just a pen, which probably didn’t cost much at all to produce, I think it is a successful product because it is advertises a Chiropractor in a successful way. It’s a creative and memorable way to advertise your company, and whenever you need to write something and you use this pen, you will be reminded of the company.

Even though it feels like I have seen Papyrus font in many different places before, I had a bit of trouble finding something that used it. I went to the grocery store to see if I could find anything that used this text. The first thing I found was a bottle of Arizona Green Tea. I have seen the logo many times but I never really noticed that it used the Papyrus font. The picture I took of it did not come out very well but I still wanted to upload it to show that I actually took it myself instead of just getting a picture of it off of the internet. I also found the same writing on a gift card for Olive Garden. The font, to me, gives things an exotic look. It is also in a way somewhat relaxing to me. For example, if I were to see a spa that had its sign in Papyrus font, I would think, “Hey, I want to go to that spa. It looks pretty chill” and the same would go for restaurants and maybe even other places as well. So, I think that in a way it is a good font to use for a lot of different things, and plus I actually like the font a lot.

I found some handwritten text in an advertisement for the 2011 Toyota Highlander. There is a picture of the back of the car and on the side there are notes about some of the cool features that it has. I think it is meant to look like a kid wrote them, showing how much he likes the car. Even though most of the words on the page are handwritten, they are very neatly done. I think the handwritten words have a nice touch to the page, and I even think it is better than type. The handwritten words make it look like a child wrote it, and that he approves of the car. If children like the car and think it is cool, I think that is something that would make parents consider buying one to drive their family around in.

I think there are a lot of cigarette advertisements that are interesting to write about, so once again I tried searching the web for one. I was expecting something a bit different, but this came up and I decided to choose it because I think it definitely contains a myth. The connotative value of this advertisement is a man by himself out in nature. He is taking a break from his bike ride so he can enjoy a cigarette. The denotative value of this advertisement is that not only is he a man, but a rugged, wilderness-exploring man. Also, rugged, wilderness-exploring men smoke Camel cigarettes. I think this is a myth because one does not achieve this lifestyle just by smoking a certain brand of cigarettes. However, it is like the advertisement is saying “you can be like this man too if you choose Camel”. I am not exactly certain that this advertisement works for men, because I am not one, plus cigarettes don’t really appeal to me at all, regardless of how it is being advertised. Personally I think companies should avoid advertisements like this, because obviously you can’t transform into a completely different person just by choosing one brand over another.

In this ad, a young woman is hooked through her lip and is being pulled by a fishing line, as if she was actually caught by someone who was fishing. As the text at the bottom of the ad suggests, she is “hooked” on cigarettes. I think this ad is successful at showing that smoking is not only bad for you, but it can kill you too. When a fish sees bait on a hook, they think it is something good and take a bite, which could lead to their death. Some people are attracted to cigarettes, but then become addicted, and may eventually die of health problems such as lung cancer.
